Crisis Communications

Clear messaging when every word matters.

When a crisis hits, what you say, and when you say it, can define your organization for years. At

JK Roberts, we help organizations move from reactive to prepared: building the plans, frameworks, and messaging strategies that allow leaders to communicate with accuracy, consistency, and confidence in the moments that matter most.

Our approach is practitioner-built, not PR-generic. Every plan we develop is grounded in real-world experience, from coordinating Joint Information Center operations across a federal agency during major disaster events, to serving as communications lead during mass casualty activations at the state level, to managing press operations for senior government officials in active crisis environments. When we say we've been in the room when it counted, we mean it.

What We Deliver

Crisis Communication Plans

Tailored playbooks covering messaging strategy, spokesperson guidance, stakeholder communication, and escalation protocols.

Executive Messaging Frameworks

Pre-developed statements, holding messages, and communication trees for

high-probability scenarios.

Stakeholder Communication Plans

Mapping of internal and external audiences with tiered messaging and timing guidance.

Tabletop Exercises

Facilitated scenarios that test your team's communication readiness before a real incident occurs.

Post-Incident Review

After-action analysis of communication performance with specific recommendations for improvement.

Media Response Strategy

Spokesperson preparation, press coordination protocols, and on-the-record guidance for high-stakes moments.

Who We Serve

Executive teams, communications officers, and safety leadership in healthcare, higher education, ports and infrastructure, small business, nonprofits, and government-adjacent organizations. Particularly effective for organizations that have experienced a crisis and want to build a stronger response structure, and for those who have never tested whether their current plan actually works.

"The plan looked perfect on paper. We make sure it works when the pressure is on."

Disaster Management

Coordinated response, from planning to recovery.

Disasters don't follow organizational charts, and effective response requires coordination across sectors, stakeholders, and time zones. JK Roberts brings more than a decade of hands-on disaster management experience across federal, state, and private sector environments, serving as the connector between your organization and the broader network of partners, agencies, and resources you need when disruption strikes.

When disaster strikes, we activate our partnership with the Private Sector Emergency Management Association (PSEMA), the only national association dedicated to business-to-business resilience. PSEMA’s network brings rapid resource mobilization, cross-sector coordination, and peer connections across business and industry that extend our clients’ reach far beyond what any single organization can access on its own.

What We Deliver

All-Hazards Preparedness Planning

Comprehensive planning for natural disasters, infrastructure failures, cyber events, and public health emergencies.

Response Coordination Design

Frameworks for activating internal response teams, coordinating with government agencies, and managing public-private partnerships during an incident.

Intergovernmental Navigation

Helping organizations understand and work within federal and state emergency management structures, from agency relationships and Emergency Support Function alignment to legislative frameworks and grant-aligned planning.

Public-Private Resilience Programs

Design and facilitation of cross-sector preparedness initiatives, public-private summits, and coordination structures that function under real incident conditions, not just in planning documents.

PSEMA Network Activation

Rapid mobilization of private sector resources, peer partnerships, and cross-industry coordination through the PSEMA network, activated during active response and recovery when speed and relationships determine outcomes.

After-Action Review & Improvement

Post-incident analysis of response performance with recommendations aligned to FEMA's improvement planning framework.

Who We Serve

Ports and logistics operators, critical infrastructure organizations, healthcare systems, government-adjacent nonprofits, and private sector organizations seeking stronger coordination with federal and state emergency management agencies. Particularly effective for organizations that have experienced a disaster and discovered their response plan was not as ready as they believed, and for those building their first serious preparedness program from the ground up.

"We have spent more than a decade building relationships across government and private sector emergency management. When disaster strikes, those relationships activate."

Business Continuity Planning

Operations that hold when conditions don't.

A business continuity plan that sits in a file drawer is not a continuity plan, it is a liability. JK Roberts builds continuity programs that are operationally grounded, tested under realistic conditions, and designed to protect your people, your assets, and your reputation when disruption occurs.

Whether your organization needs a new program built from scratch, an existing plan modernized and tested, or targeted support for a specific critical function, we bring an operational perspective shaped by years of managing complex, high-stakes environments across government and private sector, where the gap between a written plan and an executed one has real consequences. What we deliver is practical and defensible, built for how your organization actually works, not for a compliance checkbox.

What We Deliver

Business Impact Analysis (BIA)

Identifying your most critical functions, dependencies, and recovery time requirements.

COOP / BCP

Full continuity of operations and business continuity plan development, aligned to industry standards and your operational reality.

Risk Assessment & Scenario Planning

Structured analysis of threats and vulnerabilities with scenario-based planning to address highest-priority risks.

Plan Modernization

Assessment and update of existing continuity plans that have not been tested, reviewed, or revised in recent years.

Tabletop Exercises & Plan Testing

Facilitated exercises that pressure-test your plan, identify gaps, and build team confidence before an actual event.

Training & Awareness Programs

Building organizational literacy around continuity roles, responsibilities, and activation procedures.

Governance & Plan Maintenance

Frameworks for keeping continuity plans current, including review cycles, ownership assignment, and change management protocols that prevent plans from going stale between exercises.

Who We Serve

Healthcare systems, critical infrastructure operators, ports and logistics companies, financial services firms, nonprofits with essential service delivery roles, and any organization whose stakeholders, regulators, boards, or the communities they serve, expect operational resilience when conditions deteriorate.

"Most continuity plans are written to pass an audit. We build them to work during an incident."

Active Threat Planning

Prevention through response, and reunification.

Most organizations have an active shooter policy. Far fewer have an active threat program. The difference is significant: a policy tells people what to do in the moment. A program prepares them before, supports them during, and holds the organization together after, including reunification, employee well-being, and operational continuity.

JK Roberts takes an end-to-end approach to active threat planning, from risk assessment and prevention through response protocols and into the reunification and recovery phases that most organizations never plan for. We design programs that are practical, legally defensible, and built for the people who will have to use them.

We also align active threat programs with crisis communications strategy, because an active threat incident is both a security event and a communications event. Organizations that treat them separately are less prepared for both.

What We Deliver - by Phase

Prevention

Prevention Risk and threat assessment, facility vulnerability review, behavioral threat awareness training, and threat identification frameworks, informed by experience managing security coordination across large-scale, high-profile events in complex multi-agency environments.

Preparedness

Response protocol development, staff training, tabletop exercises, and drill design aligned to your facility type and threat environment.

Response

Incident command alignment, communications framework, and coordination protocols with law enforcement and first responders, grounded in real activation experience during mass casualty events at the state level.

Reunification

Family reunification program design, accountability systems, parent/guardian communication trees, and reunification site planning.

Recovery

Employee well-being framework, organizational continuity guidance, leadership debrief protocols, and after-action review.

Who We Serve

Healthcare systems and hospital networks, higher education institutions, houses of worship, corporate campuses and headquarters facilities, event venues and hospitality organizations, ports and critical infrastructure operators, and government buildings with public-facing operations.

"Active threat planning is not a security checkbox. It is a full organizational commitment to protecting your people before, during, and after an incident." — Julie Kay Roberts, CEM

How We Work With You

JK Roberts works on a project basis, keeping engagements focused, efficient, and directly tied to your objectives.  Every engagement is scoped to fit the organization's specific need, and every engagement is led directly by Julie Kay Roberts. No retainer required to get started, no handoff to junior staff, no off-the-shelf frameworks relabeled as custom work.

Engagements typically take one of five forms: a short-term assessment (two to four weeks) to diagnose a specific gap or risk; a project engagement (thirty to ninety days) to develop, test, or modernize a plan or program; an advisory retainer for ongoing strategic support; an executive briefing for leadership teams that need to understand a risk landscape quickly; or tabletop facilitation to pressure-test plans and build team readiness before an incident occurs.

If you are not sure which format fits your situation, that is where the conversation starts.
